What to take on a weekend trip - minimal packing list

Weekend Trip – Minimalist Packing List

If you follow me on Instagram, you might know that I went to Chicago for the weekend to attend my friends beautiful wedding. I got a few questions about what I brought in my small backpack, so I’ve laid it all out. Everyone’s bag and needs are different but this worked really well for me.

First, a few tips for minimalist packing, no matter how long you’ll be gone:

  • Find out what is available to you at your destination. If you’re staying with family and friends, can you use their washing machine? If you’ll be at a hotel, do they have a washer/dryer or other amenities available to you? For example, I stayed at The Freehand in Chicago which offers a full kitchen (with real, reusable plates/cutlery!) and laundry facilities to guests.
  • Build a miniature capsule wardrobe (even if you don’t use one in your day-to-day life.) Think about what you can re-wear throughout your trip, especially for loungewear and travel days. Think about layering pieces that will work under/over multiple outfits. Unless you’re traveling for fashion week, chances are you don’t need to worry about wearing different looks head-to-toe each day.
  • Shoes take up a lot of space. If you aren’t minimal anywhere else, be ruthless about choosing footwear that is versatile and that you’ll actually use.
  • Focus on multi-use items in terms of toiletries and makeup. If at home you use a day cream, night cream, eye cream, facial oils and more, consider paring down to the most versatile item. I chose to bring a small container of argan oil that I could use on my face, hair and on my hands and body as needed.

Weekend Trip Away - A Minimalist's Packing List

This photo was taken the night before I left, with my phone. Not the highest quality but hopefully it gives enough of a peek at what I packed.

Here are details on what I brought with me for my two night vacation:

Sweet potato flour pizza dough flatbread recipe

Gluten Free Flatbread/Pizza Dough Recipe

This is totally grain free and gluten free. And since I purchased all of the ingredients packageless*, it produces zero landfill waste too. Okay so there’s a lot of things it isn’t but there’s one thing it definitely is (in my totally humble opinion): totally delicious. If you’re used to gluten-full dough this might be a little denser than what you’re used to but I … Continue reading Gluten Free Flatbread/Pizza Dough Recipe

Here’s the Key to Reducing Your Household or Office Waste

I don’t want to keep things from you, friend. I don’t want you to think that reducing your waste is some pie-in-the-sky ridiculous thing that only people with tons of time on their hands would ever attempt. Anyone – that means you – is capable of cutting down on the trash you produce in your home, office or out there in the world where you … Continue reading Here’s the Key to Reducing Your Household or Office Waste

Easy Treatment for Dry, Itchy Scalp

*Oh, hi there! This post contains affiliate links. Affiliate links are indicated with an asterisk.

I have scalp psoriasis that’s almost entirely controlled by my diet but I occasionally get some discomfort and itchiness. Here are the two all natural, DIY treatments that help keep my hair and scalp healthy and comfortable.

First, I keep a glass spray bottle filled with diluted Apple Cider Vinegar (50/50 ACV and distilled water) in my shower. No need to go out and buy a glass spray bottle (they can be hard to find, and pricey!) … just screw a spray trigger onto your apple cider vinegar bottle! The bottle openings are the perfect size. Mind. Blown.

After shampooing and conditioning (or sometimes after shampooing but before applying conditioner), I spray the mixture onto my hair as well as concentrating a few sprays directly onto my scalp by parting my hair in a few places around my head. I let it sit on my scalp for a few minutes before rinsing out. I do this every time I wash my hair, which is about twice a week. It helps calm any itchiness and redness. (Not surprising since it also works this way on bug bites!)

Secondly, about every other week I apply this oil treatment before I get in the shower:

Are you afraid of being a careful consumer?

I’m not ashamed to say that before I took on a more minimalist lifestyle, I had a fear that having fewer, better things would get boring. I love testing out new products, discovering little shops, trying new things. Could I ever tame my consumerist beast? At one point in my life, I really did think it was easier to just buy a new shirt or new socks … Continue reading Are you afraid of being a careful consumer?

Book List: What to Read if You’re Interested in Zero Waste, Plastic Free Living

I wouldn’t exactly consider myself a zero waste lifestyle expert, even though I’m serving as a kind of example since I publish posts on this blog and share about my life pretty freely on social media. I’m just setting up systems for my family and figuring out the best way to reduce my waste. Of course I’m happy to share my experiences, tips and advice … Continue reading Book List: What to Read if You’re Interested in Zero Waste, Plastic Free Living

Shopping in bulk, zero waste at Costco

Zero Waste at Costco?

I’m going to give away the ending: we cancelled our Costco membership earlier this year. Or, rather, we didn’t renew. My husband and I were big Costco fans – true company loyalists. And now, it just doesn’t fit with how we’re living our life. When you say “shop in bulk” many people think of stores like Costco, Sam’s Club and BJs. And it’s true, you are … Continue reading Zero Waste at Costco?

Plastic-free, zero waste water filtration

We’ve been testing out this system for 6 months+, and I really like it. There are pros and cons but it works well for us so I can’t see us switching it up any time soon. The best part – besides getting nice yummy water – is that the entire thing is plastic free and zero waste! We drink a lot of water and I know … Continue reading Plastic-free, zero waste water filtration

zero waste upcycle DIY projects

Achievable Upcycle and DIY Projects

Whether you’re a DIY junkie or just like watching (ahem, pinning) from afar, getting crafty at home can be more than just a fun project. If you incorporate materials that might otherwise be thrown away or recycled, or items that are used/previously owned, your craft serves other purposes 1) being eco-friendly and 2) making something useful out of something that would’ve normally been garbage. If you live … Continue reading Achievable Upcycle and DIY Projects

Two months of living zero waste

Two months down! I’m feeling like we’re really in a good place … to tweak everything. We’ve spent the past few months figuring out the basics, and now we can hone and really put systems (and products/attitudes/schedules) in place to keep this little zero waste family grooving for the longer term.

We weren’t exactly flying by the seat of our pants in January and February, but kind of. (Side note: we’re parents to a toddler so basically every day is just “winging it and hoping it works!”) We go to the supermarket more often than we probably could, and we also tend to bring more bags/containers than we need. Better to be overprepared, for sure, but I don’t like it to feel cumbersome.

First, a note on the trash jar. Yes, I’ve jumped right onto the jar bandwagon made popular by Bea Johnson and Lauren Singer. It’s a standard way of showcasing this lifestyle and I’m happy to be “typical” in this regard. Really happy. The landfill waste we produced in February fits in a f-ing jar. Wha?! I’m so psyched.

Of course, no joke on March 1 my husband got a package in the mail just positively filled with plastic trash… but that’s for next month’s post (and jar) to deal with.

Without further ado, here’s our trash JAR from February!
